We were saddened to hear of the death of Gillian Pirich (nee Hill) on Sunday 23rd October. As a child, she attended Sunday School. Her mother, Hilda, was a longstanding member of the church, whilst her grandfather, George Pitchford, was a deacon. Details of the funeral are not yet known.
Linda and Sandra have painted pictures which, along with a carefully chosen Bible verse, are being turned into an A4 calendar for 2023. Copies can be purchased for £8.00. Place your orders with Val. They'd make ideal Christmas presents, too. Proceeds, once printing costs have been paid, will go to church funds.
Miriam has been making Christmas cards. Large cards cost £1.80 and small cards 30p. (Again, proceeds for church funds) Please see Miriam to purchase these.
Val would like to thank everyone for their support to her for Trussell Trust Step Up September Challenge. Donations were £135 to Trussell Trust and £205 to our local Foodbank. It will make a difference. Please continue to make food donations in the container in foyer. There is greater need than ever for this help.
CHANGEABLE TIMES: After the changes in September when the Queen died just after appointing a new Prime Minister, and Prince Charles became King, we thought things would settle down, but after a few weeks we now have another Prime Minister. He needs our prayers. Already some people are dissatisfied because they did not have the chance to vote for a new leader.
Some changes are welcomed with enthusiasm, such as a new job or new house or even moving to another part of the country or abroad. But other changes cause turmoil and are unwelcome such as when we had lockdowns. There is great concern about the economic situation. Many people are finding it difficult to provide the basic needs for themselves or for their families and are worrying about how they will cope when things get worse as we have been told they will.
In some countries people are fleeing from their homes because of natural disasters or wars, persecution, false imprisonment, torture or even death. We especially think of those from Ukraine who have had to leave their men-folk behind and are now in strange countries where most of them don’t know anyone or speak the language, making communication difficult. We need to pray for them and realise the trauma of such a situation. Psalm 137 gives us an insight into that. It tells of the feeling of the Jews who have been taken into captivity in the land of Babylon. When it was demanded that they sing ‘songs of joy’ and ‘the songs of Zion’ they said in verse 4, “How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?” Although the Jews were prisoners in Babylon, for many Ukrainians the traumatic effect of the war and not knowing how long it will be before they can return to their country must be very similar.
The Churches are also finding that things are different since Covid. It is evident from the prayers sent in by churches for the NMBMN Prayer letter that the same question is being asked, in slightly different ways, by many churches. There are phrases such as, “seek to discern the way God is leading”; “what next steps do we need to take?” “seek God’s guidance for the future”; “prayer to find the most appropriate way to proceed”; “future direction as a church”. They feel that this is the time to take stock and make changes. All through the centuries the local and national churches have had to do that as there have been new insights into the best way to worship God.
In the 1970’s many people had a new awareness of the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives, leading to more reliance upon God and miracles of healing taking place in local churches. Music in churches has gradually evolved through the centuries. Many of us have seen a great change in our lifetime in the type of hymns or worship songs sung and their accompaniment for church services.
So how do we cope with any of these changes? We need to remember that we have a God who loves us and who has promised to always be with us. He told Joshua in Joshua 1: 9 “Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (NKJV) Jesus told His disciples, “I will be with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:20b (NIV). He also promised the power of the Holy Spirit to guide and direct them. (John 14:16-17) That promise is for all who would follow after them and trust in Him throughout the centuries to the end of time. In His prayer to God the Father, Jesus prays for the disciples who are with Him, but then says, “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” John 17:20-21. (NIV) Those who have faith in Him, listen to and obey His voice, and put everything into His hands, will find that the “Lord will provide.” A well known example of this is George Muller who had an orphanage. He never asked for money or anything they needed, but there was always someone who would happen to turn up at the right time with a gift of money, or something they desperately needed, such as a baker, who, having mistakenly baked too much bread, brought the extra loaves to them not knowing that they had nothing for breakfast. Muller trusted completely in the Lord for everything.
We are not promised that everything will be easy, but we are promised help to see us through the hard times. We need to keep praising the Lord for each blessing, however small, and read the Bible where we find words of comfort, encouragement and help.
Paul endured all kind of hardships, including imprisonment, but was able to write in his letter to the Romans 8:25&27 (NIV),
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”
The Lord be with you,
Kathie.
